What is Heart Disease?

Approximately 25% or one in every four adults die from heart disease. It is the number one reason for deaths for men and women in the U.S.

What is Heart Disease?

The most common type of heart disease is coronary heart disease and is caused by plaque buildup in the arteries that creates blockage and inhibits blood flow to the heart.

Congestive heart failure is another type of heart disease that occurs when the heart stops beating. Blood and oxygen doesn’t flow as much as the heart needs while its pumping, causing it to stop.

Heart disease can lead to heart attacks and strokes, which are the second high cause of death in adults over 60.

Strokes occur when one of the blood vessels that lead to the brain gets blocked by a clot and causes brain cells to die. If too many brain cells die, the stroke can be fatal, much like a heart attack.

What Causes Heart Disease?

Heart disease does not develop overnight. Years of incorrect, unhealthy eating, smoking, or not exercising causes heart disease.

Eating foods that are high in cholesterol or sodium lead to higher risk of heart disease since both of these directly lead to plaque buildup in blood vessels and arteries.

Studies show that obesity is linked to heart disease as a result of unhealthy eating and stress added to the heart.

Smoking increases blood pressure and the risk of blood clots. Exercise becomes more difficult as well since there is decreased lung strength and capacity, which decreases the amount of oxygen that can reach the blood.

Lack of exercise is dangerous because weight gain can raise blood pressure levels and increase body fat–slowing down metabolism and insulin levels.

High blood pressure is a leading cause of heart disease. High blood pressure arises from plaque buildup as well, which leads to heart attacks, diabetes, and strokes.

How To Treat Heart Disease

Heart disease is treatable through fixing the exact reasons it occurred.

Eating correctly by replacing fatty, sodium filled food in your diet with more vegetables, fruits, and fiber will help treat heart disease and lower blood pressure.

Exercising and losing weight will also help your heart become stronger and healthier. Getting your heart rate up for at least 30 minutes a day can help you lower blood pressure and reduce chances of heart attack or stroke.

Exercise also benefits your stress levels by releasing endorphins in your brain that relaxes your muscles and encourages happiness.

Studies show that those who exercise regularly tend to sleep better and are less anxious than those who do not regularly exercise.

Smoking must go if you struggle with heart disease or high blood pressure. It is a widely known fact that cigarettes are all around bad for your health, so use this as a reason to finally quit!

Smoking can take years off of your life and age your skin and heart much quicker than they normally would without cigarettes.

Finding motivation is imperative to stick to a program. Think of something or someone that is worth quitting for, including yourself!

Treatment for heart disease can also include medications prescribed from a doctor or supplements like L-Arginine Plus to help blood flow and lower blood pressure.
